I'm sure that thousands went to work in the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon last week not expecting it to be their last day on Earth. Our first priority should be our spiritual foundation. I personally believe that God did not cause this horrible action and that justice will be done at some point in time. Meanwhile, we should respect one another regardless of religious or ethnic background. In fact, our classes look like a microcosm of the United Nations so we have a first-hand opportunity to show that peoples from many nations can get along together and even work side-by-side. The enclosed note from a UT Vice President is intended to assure you that we can all enjoy these basic rights without fear. If any of you need accommodation for this or other religious observances, please let me know. See you in class tomorrow. D. For example, Rosh Hashanah begins this evening, September 17, at sundown. Religious observance is important for the spiritual well being of many in our University family. But in a society that is predominantly Christian, religious observance by members of other faiths can be challenging. This is especially true for students. When class schedules, exams, course-related events, and other University-related activities conflict with special religious observances, students sometimes find themselves in untenable situations. Given the importance of religious observance without fear of penalty, faculty, staff and administrators should make serious efforts to accommodate the religious observance needs of our students. Reasonable efforts should be made to provide students with alternative opportunities to complete course requirements. It is also incumbent upon students to notify appropriate faculty, staff or administrators as early as possible in order that suitable options might be offered. []
